Invisalign can help correct some overbites and crossbites, but the name of a bite problem does not tell you whether aligners are the right choice. Your teeth, the way your jaws meet and the movements needed all matter. A consultation should explain the goal and the limits of the proposed treatment.
Overbite, overjet and crossbite: what is the difference?
These terms describe different relationships between the upper and lower teeth:
- Overbite: the vertical overlap of the upper front teeth over the lower front teeth. An excessive overlap is often called a deep bite.
- Overjet: how far the upper front teeth project forward beyond the lower front teeth.
- Crossbite: when some upper teeth sit inside the lower teeth when you close your mouth. It can involve front or back teeth.
Invisalign explains the difference between overjet and overbite and describes different types of crossbite. You do not need to diagnose yourself before booking. Describe what you notice, such as a tooth that catches or difficulty bringing your teeth together.
When might clear aligners be an option?
Invisalign lists overbite and crossbite among the conditions its aligners may address. Suitability depends on the particular bite. A front-tooth overlap and a problem involving the relationship between the jaws can require different plans.
The FDA explains that more complex orthodontic conditions may need braces or other treatments. An examination helps assess the teeth, bite and dental history; scans or impressions can support planning. A digital preview does not replace that assessment.
Ask for a plain-language explanation: “Are we changing the positions of my teeth, addressing how my bite fits together, or both?” If another approach or a specialist assessment is recommended, ask what it would add.
Discuss function as well as appearance
A straighter-looking smile is only one part of the discussion. The American Dental Association describes orthodontic care as treatment for tooth and jaw alignment problems, including bites that can affect chewing or tooth wear.
Tell the dentist what you want to change and what bothers you day to day. Ask which concerns the proposed plan addresses and which it does not. Do not assume that a bite adjustment will resolve every symptom you have.
What should your treatment explanation include?
Before deciding, make sure you understand the recommendation beyond the appearance of the trays:
- The target: what would change in your bite, and how would progress be assessed?
- The appliances: does your plan include attachments, elastics or another component? Ask what each does rather than assuming every plan is the same.
- The follow-up: who checks your progress, and what happens if the plan needs to change?
- The estimate: which records, appointments, additional aligners and retainers are included?
Get an individual timeline and written estimate after the assessment. A timeframe from a different patient’s case may not apply to your bite.
Frequently asked questions
Can adults have a bite assessed for Invisalign?
Yes. Adults can discuss orthodontic options with a dentist or orthodontist. Age alone does not explain whether a particular bite can be treated with aligners; your oral health and the proposed movements need an individual assessment.
Does a crossbite always require braces?
No. Invisalign identifies clear aligners as an option for some crossbites, depending on the type and cause. Other approaches may be recommended. Ask why the suggested option fits your findings.
Can I choose treatment just for my front teeth?
Ask what that would mean for your overall bite. Be clear if appearance is your main concern, then request an explanation of the options and their limits before choosing a plan.
